Journey
Born Amanda Benedicta Antony in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, Amanda Black is an influential South African Afro-soul and R&B singer-songwriter. Her deep connection to music began in childhood, singing in church choirs from age six. She honed her craft in various talent competitions, including three attempts at Idols South Africa, where her final run in Season 11 secured her a place in the Top 7 and gave her the necessary visibility to launch her professional career.
Black's breakthrough arrived in 2016 with her powerful debut single, "Amazulu." The track became a nationwide sensation, leading her debut album of the same name to achieve platinum certification within just three weeks of its release. This success firmly established her distinct musical style, which fuses contemporary R&B and soul with traditional African elements like Maskandi and Xhosa rhythms.
Beyond her sound, Amanda Black’s image is defined by the traditional Xhosa facial markings (umchokozo) she wears. She uses this visual statement to reclaim her cultural identity, promote Black consciousness, and encourage self-love and empowerment among young Black South Africans. Her music reflects these values, with lyrics in both Xhosa and English addressing themes of strength, identity, and personal power.
Apple Music recognized Black as its most-streamed artist in 2019, and she also received four South African Music Awards (SAMAs). She has continued to release critically acclaimed projects, including the albums Power (2019), Mnyama (2021), and From My Soil To Yours (2023), collaborating with global talents such as American R&B star Anthony Hamilton. Her powerful voice and meaningful storytelling cement her status as a leading voice in modern African music.
